Peoples of Vorto

Grovns

The native people of Yarog. Strong, resilient, keeping the memory of the Black Bear.

About the people

The Grovns are the native people of Yarog. They are strong, heavy, and resilient creatures, used to the harsh northern way of life, the dampness, the cold stone, and life by the Grovn Lake. Their society rests on clans, elders, strength, and the memory of the past.

The Grovns are wary of outsiders and resent Rodia's rule, even though after the Liberation War Yarog became a region within it. Ancient beliefs tied to the Black Bear endure among the people.

Everyday life

Daily life and customs

The Grovns' way of life is simple and practical. They live in dugout houses: inside such a dwelling a large den is dug out, with a living level and a storeroom beneath it where supplies are kept. The home is built around a hearth. Nearby lies a resting place made of branches, hides, or hardened clay; set apart from it is a work area for tools.

The Grovns' belongings are rough, heavy, and dependable: hides, ropes, massive furniture, supplies, fish, work tools, wet cloaks, and clan objects. Their way of life does not strive for elegance — it is made for survival, the protection of the kin, and the preservation of the memory of the times when Yarog did not yet answer to Rodia.
