Taren Republic

The Taren Republic lies by the western sea, among mountains and coastal cliffs. The Tarens live in communities and practice fishing, hunting, and crafts. Shamanism lies at the heart of their culture. Through rituals and communion with the spirits of nature, they preserve their connection with the world around them.

The Tarens were once under the rule of Lageria. During the Liberation War, with the support of Rodia, they gained independence and founded their own republic. The Tarens call its system spiritual democracy. The country is led by a shaman-leader whom the people accept during a communal rite at Namir. The leader becomes the voice of the Tarens before the spirits of nature.

The Taren Republic consists of separate communities. Their affairs are decided by elders and shamans. When a matter concerns the entire country, the communities gather together and turn to the shaman-leader.

The people accept a new leader during a communal rite at Namir, the sacred rock of Sea Cliff that preserves the Tarens’ bond with nature and its spirits. Shamans, elders, and Tarens from different communities enter the circle. The future ruler must hear their shared rhythm and recognize the signs of nature. Only then is the right to speak on behalf of the entire republic acknowledged.

The shaman-leader unites the communities, reconciles them in disputes, and makes decisions on which the fate of the country depends. The leader conducts the principal rites, maintains the bond with Namir, and represents the republic before other states. In times of peace, the shaman-leader remains the voice of the Tarens; when faced with a threat, the leader becomes their chief.
