About the people
The Tarens live among mountains and coastal cliffs. They are known for their strength and endurance, but regard calmness, responsibility to the community, and the ability to maintain harmony with the spirits of nature as their greatest virtues.
They sense the spirits’ presence in the movement of the sea, changes in the weather, the condition of the land, and the behavior of living creatures. Spirits may warn of danger, offer guidance, or respond to human actions. For the Tarens, living in harmony with nature therefore means noticing its signs and understanding the consequences of their deeds.
Taren shamanism is founded on this bond. Shamans conduct rites, commune with the spirits, and help the communities understand their will. The leader of the Tarens holds a special place among them as the keeper of Namir and the spiritual guide of the people. He unites the communities, speaks on their behalf, and leads the people in times of danger.
Daily life and customs
The Tarens live in Sea Cliff and in small settlements among the coastal rocks. Their homes stand on ledges or extend deep into the stone. Stairs, bridges, and lifts connect the different levels of the city. They carry residents, catches, and cargo from the docks to the upper districts.
The sea shapes much of their life. The Tarens fish, repair boats, and dry their nets on open platforms. In their workshops, they work stone, leather, wool, copper, and bronze. After storms, they rebuild bridges together, clear paths, and reinforce their homes.
The Tarens live in harmony with nature. This bond lies at the heart of their daily life. Shamans help interpret the signs of the surrounding world and pass their knowledge on to their students. During communal rites, they lead songs and dances, gradually bringing those gathered into a single rhythm. Through it, the Tarens address the spirits of nature and feel themselves part of the world around them.
